Plot Summary: The story begins in 1840s in Chile. A young girl, Eliza Sommers, is raised by English siblings, Rose and Jeremy Sommers with the help of their sailor brother, John Sommers. Eliza was left at their doorstep as a newborn and grows up sheltered in the care of the Sommers siblings. Upon her maturity, falls in love with Joaquin Andieta, a young, impoverished Chilean. The young couple has an affair and Eliza becomes pregnant. Joaquin goes to California in search gold and fortune. Eliza quickly follows with the help of Tao Chi'en, a Chinese physician, and thus begins the heroine's journey to find her first love in California.
